Kuchu Buranko trailer is out.

Why are all of Kuchu Buranko's protags male? In an anime about people's psychological issues, having all male protagonists sends a clear message that women's problems don't matter, and that you don't think anyone would want to watch a show about women and their problems, not even for a single episode.

They're doing this thing with the protagonists of each episode - they're all designed to look like the (very popular) voice actors playing them. I think that's pretty nifty, but there are plenty of wildly popular female seiyuu they could have done this with as well. It's not like only male seiyuu are popular. Yet they went so far as to switch a couple of characters who were female in the books to male in the anime.

One of wonderful things about Mononoke was the feminism. So why, why all male protags in this one? It doesn't even seem like the kind of show that's targeting the fangirl hordes or anything, so it seems unlikely the decision was for that reason.

I'm still excited to see it - I mean, it looks like a pure acid trip, and you all know how I am when it comes to surreal imagery - but I'm really disappointed by the all male protags thing.

…Well, that's a pretty easy way to ensure that I won't watch it.

Oh, man, though, animated Paku Romi or someone would have been gorgeous. :(

Paku Romi's voicing the little version of the doctor guy, so she would have been out of the running anyway. XD; But yes, TOTALLY. Animated Paku Romi would have been awesome. *_*

Aaah, I missed that. …Oddly enough, that ticks me off more on so many meta-levels.

DEAR JAPAN: LET PAKU ROMI BE BADASS FEMALE CHARACTERS MORE OFTEN, YOU KNOW SHE CAN DO IT

CONSIDER HOW BADASS SHE IS IN REAL LIFE

SHE DOES NOT ALWAYS NEED TO VOICE TINY LITTLE GRUMPY BOYS

Also consider how badass she was in Claymore, and Amatsuki. 8(

I have not seen either of those anime! I can't stand how clean the CLAYMORE anime looks, it makes everything feel too alien and cold; and I didn't know AMATSUKI had an anime.

YES, EXACTLY.

Also: they can recognize famous female seiyuu, they just can't… have female protagonists? WHAT.
eisen: Kururu (unexpected symphonies). (all apologies.)

Maybe I should stop expecting creators to carry over feminist impulses from one work to the other. Except I don't want to have to do that.

ETA: WAIT, I MISSED THE SENTENCE WHERE THEY ACTUALLY SEX-SWAPPED THE FEMALE CHARACTERS FROM THE NOVEL GRAR RAGE KILL DEATH MAIM DESTROY

ETA2: god why.

The trailer pretty much killed my interest in watching the series, tbh.

Really? I thought it looked pretty nifty, aside from the only female in it being the fetishized nurse.

I think I finally came up with a good whatever (metaphor?) for this: Feminism in Japanese entertainment is like Baptists liking gays. It happens sometimes but is nowhere near the norm.

As Neojaponisme put it in their article on kyabajo culture, The word “feminist” in Japan does not even mean “one who believes in gender equality”: it means “one who is nice to women.”

Consider that Hayao Miyazaki said, recently, that he's beginning to tire of writing female protagonists because he has women working in his company and they all act confident and self-assured and so he thinks maybe there's no need for characters like Nausicaa anymore.
