My thoughts on yaoi. No, no, I mean tits.

A random thought: when ladies complain about the "freakish" size of boobs in anime/manga, it kind of makes me feel like a freak. I also want to see more of a normal range - everything is either delicious flat chest or watermelon-sized these days - but (and I might be reading too much into it here) I get the impression that some people just have a problem with the gargantuan boobs being there at all. And well, that kind of makes me feel embarassed and humiliated about my own boobs.

I realize that compared to someone like say, Rangiku from Bleach, my boobs are not even that large - but still, many women really are that large. And yes, I realize there are some problems with the way breast-size is treated in anime and manga, to say nothing of the vast number of other problems with the portrayal of women's bodies in anime and manga. (And in western media too, of course, but I'm not talking about western media for the moment.) I also realize that in some series, the giant-boob-syndrome has passed the levels of believability and gone into the realm of "anyone with boobs that large has a medical problem and would probably not even be able to move around without pain, much less kick ass".

Still. That's how I feel when I hear people complaining. I mean, maybe this is just my own trigger - I really don't like my boobs and feel self-conscious about them. So maybe people are not saying that Rangiku's boobs are beyond the realm of believability, period, and that's just what I'm hearing. But I'd just thought I'd, y'know, put it out there, on the chance that people really have forgotten that women's boobs do actually come in watermelon-size, too.

(...Well, I guess I'm more cantaloupe-sized than watermelon-sized, lol.)

p.s. - This isn't a plea for reassurances of my attractiveness. XD; I appreciate the thought and all, but I'm fairly confident in being a modestly good-looking person, or at least an average-looking one. Body-image is a very complex thing and there are many aspects of my appearance that make me feel gross, but that doesn't mean I actually believe I am freakish or ugly.

(MY CAVEAT: I don't think I'm your target, since I don't think I've ever complained about "freakish"(?!?!) breast sizes in anime and manga. But since I DO have some issues with a related… issue, I will ramble about that instead!)

My problem is more… when big breasts are being played unrealistically. Like, aside from the HOW THE HELL DOES SHE FIGHT WITH NO SUPPORT D8 automatic reflex (why are there no large breasted characters with AT LEAST bras, sob), it's more that there's a certain type of mangaka who will draw big breasts that defy gravity for no apparent reason other than that they seem to think that's what breasts should look like? I don't encounter it so much these days, but IN THE DAY there were a lot of, well… basketballs attached to chests and floating in midair. And THAT'S what I feel is unrealistic, because breasts are like any other part of the body in that GRAVITY WORKS (and you can get away with antigravity more with small breasts just because… they're small! there's less of them for gravity to affect anyway!) Unsurprisingly, I think all of the people who drew in the BASKETBALL CHEST style that I saw were dudes.

…I actually think Bleach is pretty good about this, though, so, whatever. It has a nice size range, too! Which is pretty damn awesome.

Also, if people really want to see freakish breast sizes (or dick sizes, really), they should go to /d/. I am just sayin'.

I don't think I have ever been in there. The thread of sanity I have left is too precious.

I wasn't too traumatized, actually. I'm not sure what that says about me. But, man, THOSE are unrealistic body part sizes. Mainstream manga has NOTHING on that.

No, you're definitely not the target XD And I totally agree about the support thing - I mean, if you've got large breasts you're going to need to buckle that shit down or they're going to hurt, get in the way, and generally cause problems. And Bleach is pretty good about showing gravity, but as far as I can tell Rangiku's are just, like, hanging there without a bra or bindings or anything, and god only knows how she fights like that.

[nods] I just figured I'd toss in that fun aspect of various manga-style arts by people who have probably never seen a naked woman. And now that I think about it more, I think one of the other characters in Bleach with large breasts had them bound with bandages? I can't imagine that's ideal support, but it's better than nothing. So KT definitely gets a pass from me there. (Plus, I mean, Rangiku is hot. So.)

Well I'll accept bandages because unless I'm mistaken that's what people used to use for the purpose, right? And yeah, Rangiku is hot. XD; The whole thing with support is really a very minor concern on my list, and I'm not actually asking for realism - that would take half the fun out of shounen - but to a certain degree I would like things to be more with the bounds of reason.

Yeah, exactly. ♥ TO ALL OF THAT.

maybe it depends who is complaining? I definitely don't see many Rangikus around here (i.e. in an Asian city, to the great sorrow of many Asian guys), I think the Rukia/Nanao type is much more the (local ideal) norm.

personally I hold nothing against mangakas drawing busty women as long as they also draw boys in tight pants (unfortunately I usually have to go to Reborn/DRSK j-fanart sites to get this)
