JUST WHY WOULD YOU EVER

After watching 4 episodes of Hana Yori Dango (Japanese drama version), I am forced to conclude that it is actually two entirely different shows mashed together. One of them is absolutely hysterically funny and charming! The other is INTENSELY DISTURBING AND INFURIATING.

There is so much OH MY GOD JUST WHY WOULD YOU EVER in such a short space I can't even -

Okay so, let's have the Designated Love Interest be the kind of scummy asshole that would actually try to get the heroine gang raped to run her out of the school! Then, later, when he has started to actually act like something akin to a human being, let's have her friend backstab her and get a random guy at a club to slip her a roofie and take half-naked pictures of her next to him, and then spread them around the school! And then, to top it off, let's have Designated Love Interest not believe her when she tries to tell him that this wasn't her doing and decide she must be a cheating bitch (nevermind the fact that she has never agreed to go out with him in the first place)! This sounds great, right?!

NO. No, this sounds perfectly AWFUL, what were you THINKING.

It's all the more upsetting because when the show is funny and charming, it's really funny and charming. And then they just keep throwing all this jarringly awful sexist bullshit in there. Am I seriously supposed to be rooting for this couple? SERIOUSLY???

I am told that the manga for this is just as awful, which, considering that it is supposedly the best selling shoujo manga of all time, disturbs me on so many levels I can't even begin to enumerate them.

I'm ambivalent about Hana Yori Dango, for many of the same reasons you mentioned. I love Makino, and Domyouji is an adorable dork. . . when he's not being a massive bully who needs to be sent to therapy for YEARS. The Korean adaptation actually opens with a student attempting *suicide* in order to escape the bullying.

I'd take the Jdrama and the Kdrama over the manga any day. I bought the first four volumes of the series, and gave up in disgust when the hero nearly rapes the heroine (he loves her! he loves her, and how dare she not love him! rape is the answer!) I checked out the last chapter at onemanga, and nearly blacked out with rage: the series ENDS with the hero questioning the heroine's loyalty.

After 20-whatever volumes of character development and OTP building, the hero should not still be doubting the heroine the moment she leaves his sight.

What I can't understand is WHY girls would apparently desire a bully of that caliber? Given the wish-fulfillment aspect of this kind of shoujo, I can only assume that they WOULD. WHY???

Domyouji is an adorable dork, which makes me all the more go "?!!?!?!!! BUT WHY" when he's awful. Why can't he just be a NORMAL violent bad boy! You can be a violent bad boy without falling to those depths of awfulness!

There are a lot of jerky shoujo heroes, aren't there? I think I've been pretty lucky with my reading, but I'm heard stories. Hot Gimmick, I'm looking at you!

It's not just a manga thing, either. I have horror stories from my years of reading romance novels.

What I can't understand is WHY girls would apparently desire a bully of that caliber?

Maybe. . . if he's on your side, your safe? His jerkish behaviour is on your behalf? I don't know.

I doesn't help that things move so fast in Hanadan. Domyouji puts Makino through *hell.* I don't think a good woobie face and a few noble actions are enough to make up for everything he did. Things might be different in the manga, but I don't think that what he did was ever really addressed.

I think setting Makino up for a gang rape deserves an apology at the very least. One thing I liked about the Kdrama: Jun Pyo told the guys to shake up Jandi, but he had no idea that they were going to try to rape her, and was visibly upset when he found out about it. Still, he never apologized to *her.*

I'm glad that you enjoyed Love Shuffle. It had a few headdesk moments of it's own, but it was awesome overall.

I was impressed by how the Kiku-rin's sexuality was handled. I was afraid that he was going to be a Secret! Gay! Villain! and was so *relieved* when he wasn't.

Ojiro/Kairi was the biggest surprise of the series, I think. I love how *she* took charge of their relationship, and didn't passively accept Ojiro's advances.

The Twitter drama is supposed to have a similar feel to Love Shuffle; I haven't seen it yet, but you may want to keep your eyes open for it.

Somehow I sure it couldn't be what it seemed like with Kikurin from the beginning, although for a while there I was starting to worry that I was wrong...

YES, that was what was srsly hot about that pairing. I have the feeling that she is v. unpredictable in bed, too. 8D;; (Omg, that scene with the face licking! And the "Do you really want to become a monster?" and the giggle. I was like, whoa, Kairi, when did you get so incredibly hot.)

(also YES omg it was really bothering me that no one even brought up the rape thing once he started chasing after her, wtf, Domyouji, WTF.)

Oh, I finished Love Shuffle, btw! TY for the rec, I REALLY REALLY LIKED IT. So much so that I'd like to watch it again, but if I ever hear Eternal Flame again, it will be too soon, what the hell.

Unexpected gay was UNEXPECTED. (I was expecting his dead lover to look like one of the guys, but I wasn't expecting it to BE a guy...)

Also, sexy Ojiro/Kairi was sexy.

I sort of wish the charming parts weren't there; I'm feeling this intense disappointment that it's not the show it could be because of them. :\

I stopped reading the manga a long time ago because of that. :/ Although I heard that the drama was better (and do think it looks pretty), I could never bring myself to watch it since I knew the same dynamic would be in place. It is totally disturbing, and I can only be thankful that no drama was made of, say, Hot Gimmick, because that would have me keysmashing in anger and rage.
